Portland Real Estate is on the front page of NuWire Investor this week. Yours truly quoted extensively. The article begins:
Real estate in Portland, Ore., is arguably one of the West Coast’s best-kept secrets. In addition to ski resorts and coastal areas within driving distance, Portland real estate has median housing prices more affordable than most other major cities in the Western U.S. What investors find to be most remarkable about the real estate market in Portland, however, is the fact that it is growing, in spite of the sub-prime disaster sweeping the country. Its hardy performance begs the question: What exactly makes Portland so special?

That is great. I wish here in Michigan we were growing, but that’s not the case. Have a great 2008.
Occam’s Razor: What makes Portland special is that it is late.
Great post and very positive comments by Charles.
Surprise, no comments by the ‘negatives’ here. Guess the good investor report got them thinking..
No, the ‘negative’ folks are just shaking their heads and thinking this is another paid ad by the Portland Visitors Association. I say give it another 9 months and we’ll see what pans out. Our shit hasn’t hit the fan, yet.

Did you catch the “Occam’s Razor” comment?

it means more money for me on my umpqua and west coast shorts.
imo, its also bad karma for the site owner.

Europe and Asia down 6, 7 percent last night. Look for the U.S. markets to take a huge hit tomorrow. The economy is shrinking and Bernake will have to ease rates .75 percent. Only a fool would think Portland is immune.
Also dow futures are down ~550 pts. If apple misses tues…LOOK OUT BELOW!

“Nothing is immune to the downturn brought about the leadership of our esteemed President”
Does that include Portland real estate?
Nothing is immune to the downturn brought about the leadership of our esteemed President 🙂 except the Exxons and Chevrons of our times.. oh and also the Haliburtons.
But seriously with all the gloom that people paint here (including falling price of Apple stock as if every person owns that stock), I firmly believe Portland will ride out the recession better than all/most places on the west coast.
Occum’s razor? I dont think “Portland is late” is a valid argument to begin with. Portland did not see the speculative/investor buying seen in areas which are hurting today.
Have a great day!
