Bundle up the family and come to the river’s edge to watch the Christmas Ships. This event has been a holiday tradition since 1954, when the first, lone sailboat decked out with green and red ribbons cruised the currents. In the years following, skippers from the metro Portland real estate area and beyond have joined in the nautical parade, with this year’s encompassing up to 60 boats. The twinkling lights and holiday decor adorning each is the design of the owners. Divided into two groups, the fleet will travel the Columbia and Willamette Rivers respectively while crowds gather on the shore near Portland homes to watch.
For those who want a closer look, the Christmas Ships will be on display at the downtown Portland public dock across from the RiverPlace Hotel on December 19th from 3 to 5:30 p.m. A very special meet and greet, the public can view the Christmas Ships’ decorations up close and say hello to the captains. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there for a visit, too. Little ones living in Portland homes can whisper to them any last minute Christmas wishes. Ships will sail regardless of most weather conditions. Weather updates and exact parade locations are available at the Christmas Ships website.
