We’ve talked about walk scores in the past on the blog, but what if your preferred method of transportation is via bike?
Using your bike as your primary mode of transportation certainly isn’t something Portlanders are unfamiliar with. According to Forbes, Portland is the 3rd most bike friendly city in the US, and you’ve surely seen plenty of cyclists all around as you’ve traveled around the city.
The chart above shows the top 10 neighborhoods ranked by bike score (click here for the full list). Many of these probably aren’t too surprising, these are some of the more densely populated parts of the city and feature plenty of shops and things to do very close to each other. What about some of the neighborhoods that have great bike scores, but fly a little under the radar? Let’s take a look at a few of them.
Arbor Lodge
With an impressive bike score of 95, Arbor Lodge is a cyclist’s paradise. The North Portland neighborhood is a breeze to navigate by bike thanks to an abundance of bike lanes and the almost completely level elevation of the area. There is a high concentration of shops and restaurants in the area, and you should have no issue getting your daily errands done via bike. This beautiful neighborhood features a high density of historic homes from the 20’s and 30’s, as well as a bike score of 93. The South Tabor area might not be the first neighborhood people think of when it comes to bikeability, but they’re certainly no slouch with a score of 93. South Tabor is a very heavily residential neighborhood featuring a vast selection of restaurants and bars. For the more adventurous cyclist who may not always want the easy, flat commute through the neighborhood, Mt. Tabor sits in waiting close by.
